interview with Carol Thompson from Bijou Eliot

On our recent trip to the lower North Island, we caught up with our friend and P+B stockist, designer Carol Thompson from Bijou Eliot. Here she tells of her journey before Bijou Eliot, her process and how she designs a space.

Where did you live growing up?

I was born in Auckland, but have lived in New Plymouth since I was 10. We travelled around the country a lot as a family.

What did you do before Bijou Eliot?

I've been self employed most of my working life. I have always renovated and restored property. Other businesses I have had include shoes and clothing, demolition, an Antique Store. I also restored and reworked an interesting property in central New Plymouth to create boutique guest house, Issey Manor. Then Bijou Eliot.

How did Bijou Eliot begin?

Bijou Eliot began when this very run down old grocery store and home became available near Pukekura Park. We completely rebuilt it and I opened bijou there. I just basically decided to throw my whole life's experiences into one store. We quickly out-grew that lovely property and I moved into a larger space where we are now in Currie Street.

Have you been to any interesting shows recently?

WoMAD. World of Music, Art & Dance Festival. An international festival celebrating the many forms of Art, Music and Dance.

Tell us of your travels, what are some of your favourite places to visit and what it is you love about them?

In the past I have travelled around New Zealand buying and selling when I had an antique store. About 25 years ago we would import containers from Europe. I still do for Bijou, but predominantly go to Europe, however not containers though. I do love France and Tokyo for design and detail.

How do you like to chill out and relax?

Chill, not much time for that, but open air with Frida walking. And reading. Travel.

Your store has so many amazing pieces, and is curated so well. What advice would you give someone who is just starting their own collection?

It's all about the mix. Throw in a surprise. Buy quality rather than make do, save up and make the purchase matter. For example a sofa, spend money on a quality frame. You can always recover it.

Do you have any rules you like to follow when designing a space?

Rules........ I'm a non rule person really. But there has to be a connector.

If you could collaborate with someone, (can be international or from another time period) who would it be and why?

There are too many to name. I actually enjoy working with Margaret Milne who works with me in my store. We get lost for hours amongst the fabrics and ideas! I am always bursting with ideas.
